Chartfields

In SFS, the individual fields in the accounting structure are called Chartfields.  The chartfields in SFS are essentially the same as the accounting codes used in the legacy system.  The few differences are:

1)  The U (unit) part of UDDS is no longer needed because data is already
segregated by Business Unit.  So, the SFS Organization code consists of
D (division) D (department) and S (subdepartment) only.

2)  New terminology is used for some of the chartfields.

3)  Some of the legacy system object class codes have been combined into one SFS
Account.  Thus, there are fewer codes in SFS. If more detail tracking is needed, a
new field called Sub Classification can be used at the discretion of each campus.

The following diagram shows the crosswalk between legacy and SFS terminology:

Legacy Code SFS Chartfield Maintenance Responsibility
Fiscal Year Budget Year UW System Admin.
Fund Fund UW System Admin.
Activity Program UW System admin.
DDS Organization Each campus
Class Code Account UW System Admin.
Account Project/Grant Each Campus
None Sub Classification Each Campus

Additional information on the various chartfields can be viewed by clicking on the following topics.

You can also find a glossary of terms used in SFS in you go to the UW System Administration web page for the Shared Financial System.

Questions related to the Chartfields can be directed to the Controller's Office SFS@BFS.UWM.EDU.
